Substrata is an exhibition of paintings and drawings by artists Se Jong Cho and Alyssa Dennis exploring the overlapping layers of science, art, and ecology.

Se Jong Cho_Red Fungus at the Pool

Se Jong Cho blends scientific dsicipline with artistic curiostiy. Playful colors are set off by controlled executiion, resulting in imagery just this side of reality. References to art history heighten the otherworldly effect; Cho transforms the suburban setting of David Hockney’s pool paintings into environments infiltritated by mycelium, reminding viewers that the institutional art world obscures organic systems just as much as the structures we inhabit.

Alyssa Dennis Amalgamation

The drawings of Alyssa Dennis Examine how modern systems of convenience distance humans from nature and their own bodies. Architectural transections float in front of one another. Traces of initial lines bring attention to to the organic growth inherent in the drawing process. Familiar industrial materials like Tyvek wrapping and tires interrupt the unity of unity elements, representing the unnatural persistance of capitalist ideals and production.
